Here are two N Scale references to review (many times) in your planning...
[1] Dave Vollmer's N Scale Juniata Division is a "model layout" of what can be done on 2 HCDs in N Scale model railroading. Of special note: How Dave Vollmer has most effectively used scenery as viewblocks for so many vignette-scenes on each HCD. Example: See how the Enola Yard prototype at its highway overpass just northwest upriver from Harrisburg has been incorporated into "the newer" HCD.
[2] Spookshow's Model Railroading is "quite frank" in assessing -- What works, and what does not work in N Scale model railroading -- Start at the Blogs for the layout insights.

If you can't get to both long sides of a 36" door, it may be very difficult to reach all the way to the back side. A 30" reach is the furthest recommended and it may be less depending on your height and the height of your layout. If you do have a section where you can not get to both sides, you could use a narrower door.

a few years back i've drawn a plan for a friend using 4 HCD's. Maybe you can use some ideas.
We also explored an alternative since IMHO the use of those doors is rather restrictive. Though you will probably have solid reasons to use them. If you like to see the final design too just ask for it. Smile Paul

If you subscribe to the magazine, you have access to the track plan database. Don't limit your search to N scale layouts. Layouts in other scales can be adapted or at least provide inspiration.
Also, if you find a for instance HO layout that is too big or your space, that you like, don't be tempted to build it at 1/2 of the HO size. 2/3 or 3/4 is much better. A N layout built to the HO size, with appropriately modified track spacing and perhaps some additions (ie additional yard tracks, and industries) can often result in a spectacular N scale layout.

Looking for a plan for a large N-scale layout to make on 3 or 4 thirty six inch doors to possibly go like in a L-shape pattern. I guess it would be kinda of a bigger style shelf layout. Does anyone know any resource for layouts?
