One drawback to DCC is Train control is in the operators hands just like the big boys. Cornfield meets and other operator errors are far more likely than with cab control. Blocks and signals set up on a DCC system will help eliminate these errors.

Blocks are usually needed if you want train number recognition and location, occupancy detection and automation. A system well known for this kind of operation is Zimo with STP computer software.

If you have a medium to large layout you might want to set up "power districts" (see Tony's) to isolate shorts. But it's not necessary. NCE has a 3-district gizmo that looks pretty good.

It would be simple to have blocks, and you might want blocks for detection, that would let you easily isolate problems. I prefer to keep it simple so I just have the blocks I need for detection.
