Anyone Live In Fayetteville, AR Region?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 5:02 PM

I only have a Jeep Cherokee and it's 50 bucks delivery for lumber from Lowe's here so was wondering if anyone out there might have a truck and want to make some extra money to possibly build some very basic benchwork (4x8) for ho scale and either build here or deliver here?  I don't have much experience and realize it's not too difficult but it will invovle me renting a truck and also buying a drill which I'll rarely ever use.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated!  Thanks.

JJ - I wish I lived close to AR to help out, but I live in northern Illinois.  I have a small Saturn wagon, so I understand the hauling issue.  What I do to haul lumber around is to attach metal crossbeams (mine come from Yakima, but there are many brands to choose from) to the roof of my car then put the plywood, 2X4s, etc.  on top and tie it down really well with about 100ft of rope.  Then I drive slowly (about 20-25 mph) home with my hazards on, taking back roads.

If you buy a cordless variable speed unit, you will use it more than you might think.  I use mine on everything from drilling holes to driving screws for not only layout construction, but also for installing drywall, installing hooks in the ceiling for hanging my wife's plants, to attaching a hose holder, to testing my son's pinewood derby wheels, etc.

Hope this helps.

Figure out what you want and have HD cut the plywood for you.  Or, buy the 2x4 panels they have, though it will cost you more, but less than renting a truck.

I agree on the drill.  Get a midrange cordless and you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.  You can use it for everything.  Well, maybe not everything....

Jeff But it's a dry heat!
