Train elevator
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 14, 2003 10:57 AM
Has anyone tried an elevator to raise entire HO trains to a second level. My space is only 7'x11' so no room for a helix but an elevator wouldn't take up much more space then the train itself.
Any ideas on how to build such a contraption?

Dear Old Dad,
On page 80 of the January 2004 issue of MR there is an ad for a Train Elevator Display. The URL is:
<http://www.ro-ro.net/>
However, it is a pricey $ 379 plus shipping for the 4 foot module - the 6 foot module is $ 55 more. Have not actually seen it, much less used it, but its 4 1/2 inches depth should allow it to be integrated in almost any layout. The site claims it can be combined into 18 foot lengths. Can't wait to see the first review in a model railroad magazine. Hope this helps and hope the price comes down if it is widely adopted.

John Armstrong's book "Creative Layout Design" has a drawing. He calls it a Dehydrated Canal Lock.. Page 59 in my 1978 edition. It's 16' long for O scale and raises the train 2', but looks to me like you could build it to a shorter length by altering the dimensions of the pantograph arms.
Good Luck

A bit late I'm afraid, but I'm working on one now (8ft x 6in)

Details on my web site in a couple of weeks (or sneak previews on my forum now) [:)]

Hi "Old Dad,"

Besides the elevator advertised in MR that "Bob" mentioned, there's an article by *** Roberts in the 2001 edition of "Model Railroad Planning" magazine that shows how you can build your own. See "Going up!" on page 78 of MRP01. (You can order back issues at the "Shopping" section of this Web site.) I've seen video of this elevator and it worked very well.

Good luck,

Andy
