Benchwork: To Paint Or Not To Paint?

I'll go with Rex Roberts and disagree strenuously with redmountain. The only reason ever to paint any wood structure or component is because you want it to be a specific color. Please, Kansas, if you have not started painting or staining your benchwork, don't start! If you have started, stop now. The only benefit from painting or staining any woodwork of any kind is to the company that sells the paint or stain. All of this applies to outdoor or indoor woodwork, of any wood species, in any kind of climate. Paint does not "seal" wood. Neither does "wood sealer." It just makes a mess, and makes a profit for the paint store. If you ever once paint, you have to keep re-painting. If you never paint, you never have to paint.

Please, do yourself a favor: do not paint, stain, or seal your benchwork, or any other woodwork unless either (a) you want it to be a specific color, or (b) your wife threatens to seek a divorce unless the cabinet, table, or whatever is a specific color. There is no other reason to use these expensive, troublesome products.

--Zeitgeist
