Stain isn't a sealer unless it's stain AND sealer. It should say on the can. If the environment the layout is stable, sealing the wood would be for cosmetic appeal. Think about the extra cost and work. If it's acceptable, go for it. It won't hurt the layout. <br /> <br /> About plywood. If you use plywood, choose the exterior type. It's made with water proof glue. <br /> I did seal some of the plywood top on my first layout. The scenery materials didn't adhere very good to sealed plywood and after time began to crack and flake.
