If you died today, what would happen to your layout?

I once met a modeler whose dream was to get a 30 X 40 room and fill it up with a giant Z scale layout. He never got a chance to fulfill that dream, though he did leave behind a truly wonderful HO layout. Too bad his kids weren't in the hobby. They might have preserved his layout or continued it. As it is, they tore it apart and it ended up being sold at yard sales, flea markets and junk shops. Whatever didn't sell or was destroyed in the teardown, was thrown in the trash or burned. I did manage to get a few pieces of his enormous empire. Two of them are still in my possesion and are treated with great reverence and respect.

Well, my wife might keep stuff around for a while for our five-year-old to play with, but I'm not too certain of that- she doesn't really care for it, much.

j-w, I know that you're recently more active on the forum, but there is no need to start the same thread both in the General forum and in the Layouts Forum on this site. Especially in this case, since there are _two_ threads on the general forum already on basically this same topic.

I think it comes down to personalities, relationships and circumstances.

In my case I'm the youngest of 4 boys. My oldest brother thought the train set wasn't his thing and had no ambition to keep it. My other 2 brothers would both have liked to keep it but didn't have the space.... leaving me.
Oh and my Mom didn't find any sentimental attachment in it. She was glad to have the space back :) She obviously found other ways to remember my Dad by.

For me.... well my Dad enjoyed this hobby very much. So having his project that he spent so much time on and put a lot of himself into....well, it's like having a little bit of him around. Plus if I finish it, it's like we worked on it together.

I think the bottom line is.... sometimes you just don't know who's going to adopt it. and maybe if they were easier to move.... fewer sets might be dismantled down to the pieces of track where they started from. OH!.... Because they are very hard to move in one piece..... This I have learned!!!

My trains will go to a relative who has children. He likes trains and probably will enjoy them.

The rest of the layout that cannot be saved (Benchwork scenery etc) goes straight to the dumpster and the reclaimed room to be used by the surviving spouse for whatever needed.

Structures etc will likely be transported to the LHS for resale for just a few dollars to anyone who wants em.

All of my trains will go to my favorite nephew (Mathew) Although only 5, he already loves to share time with "Uncle Robert" and his trains.

Have Fun.... Bob.

Bob, I'm only 2 years younger than you, so it might look a bit strange, but can I be an adopted favorite nephew? [:D]

When I was born in 1961 my father set up a HO layout in my room and I have 8mm movies of it. I still have a couple of the original engines. When my two boys were born (now 22 & 16) I did the same thing and video taped them. Now I have at least 20 engines and 200 cars. They can do what they want with everything else but the original engines I would like to keep passing down in the family. I'd even like to live long enough for them to deceide to keep everything. Then I can go happy!

If I die today, I'll have bigger things to think about than my layout.

I'm pretty sure my heirs would give the rolling stock and motive power they did not wi***o keep themselves to the Galveston Railroad Museum. The modules themselves and the structures on them -- probably divided up amongst them and the leftovers given to the museum as well -- unless they decide to keep the whole kit and kaboodle together.

The NSA might come by and snatch the wiring set, for the last two layouts I've used a small morse code system with a bell to relay messages from one side of the layout to the other so that my partner on the opposite side will know which direction to switch the manual track switcher...

unfortunatley, I also had fun experiences making mock PA announcements that the "International Terrier Assembly" would "host a meeting at TBD," or something completely harmless like that, but, since I believe the radio in my bedroom is being tapped into and external noises and signals are being transmitted to the NSA HQ I think maybe if I pass tommarrow, the NSA would love to investigate into my little operations, however, if anybody hears about this actually happening on the news,

remind the NSA a.) they don't have a court approved warrent to spy in the first place, and b.) the meeting announcements were for the "International TERRIER Assembly," that is TERRIER DOG, not TERROR, or TERRORIST meeting....slip ups, stuff like this happens all the time in this administration, that's why I'm watching my back, and my radio.

Save this for the general forum... In the layout planning/wiring forum... Maybe some of you guys with a little more experience and knowledge than I could spend a lil' less time on meaningless B.S. topics like this and answer my meaningful and relevant question on dcc turnout alterations...

I'm hoping you don't wonder why no-one is replying!

Jeff, if I died today(I'm 13), my layout would probally go to my grandpa and never be completed...although he loves trains and he used to have a layout much bigger than the ones featured in Model Railroader, he just doesn't have the same eye and hand quardination or the rememberance of how to use power tools. So like I said, it would go to my GP and be uncompleted.
