Modifying the Houstatonic layout?

The Houstatonic RR layout in April or May issue of MR and Trains was pretty nice, though I'd like some idea's on how to modifiy it a bit to get continual running, with large storage yards.

The room is the same size as the one in the plan, thankfully.

The conrail min on the plan already has all the things you mentioned. the continuos running connection and staging yards were not shown on the plan so your on your own when designing them, though
