Hey, it is just a count, friend. It has no relationship to the quality of posts. And believe me, no one...but NO ONE...has a monoploy on quality around here. We all do what we can to make this a fun place to be.

Congratulations for sticking it out to 500 big ones![tup][yeah]

George, I for one find your posts quite useful. I talk when I know something, but I feel so ignorant on so many subjects...well there's just so many good posters here that you can learn from anyone and everyone.

There are some people here that talk out of their...well, you aren't one of them.

Thanks and I look forward to the next 500.

You are not alone. Not that I think you have 250 too many, but I have caught myself posting a few worthless, "Wow, that's nice" type posts lately too. I even caught myself reading a "My apologies to MR staff" post which I normally ignore. Getting sloppy in my older form age, I guess. I also promise to work harder on that. On a more general level I've noticed many people have put thought into their replies, the problem is they didn't take the time to understand the question. I've also started checking out the age of some of the posters. I wrote a quite scathing reply to one person who was asking why no one responded to their posts. Fortunately before I posted it, I checked and found out it was a very young kid. I would have been embarrassed had I posted it, as I wouldn't expect the same level of sophistication from some one that young. Then I also have noticed that a few of the less civil people whom I presume were banished from the list have come back under new (but similar themed) handles. Seems they can't stifle their self-glorifying and just rude comments.

I am on another form that has a much more interesting rating system. One doesn't get points for posting, but from feedback by the other form members on whether the post was helpful/meaningful or not.

I like that idea, Tex. We were just commiserating, my kin and I, about the old 'star' system of rewards that we used to have in grade school many years ago. There were discrete colours that told the onlooker what quality of work the owner produced. We students were pretty keen to do well in that system, and the numbers of gold stars were suprising after a while; they brought out the best in the learners.

Nowadays, students get two possible ratings: "satisfactory", and "needs improvement".
No mention of extraordinary effort or achievement, because competition is to be avoided. We do not reward excellence, but encourage mediocrity by grouping more and more people around a 'mean'.

Sorry, I seem to have slipped into a rant...

Rant away, Crandell! It's the truth!

Without ranting myself, I'll just say that I am discouraged by the 'mediocrity' that is becoming the norm, not only in schools, but also in society in general. The dumbing of America is what it is called. Everything is brought down to the lowest common denominator. I'm not in the lowest common denominator category and I resent things presented to me as though I were an idiot.

I don't want to sound mean, but some of the posts on this forum (and others!) are good examples. The spelling is absolutely horrible! Some of it is unintelligible! I have had to read the same post several times to discern the meaning of the post. An occassional misplaced letter in a word or phrase is understandable to a degree because typing is a matter of manual dexterity. What I can't understand is why posters apparently don't re-read their message BEFORE they post it! It isn't hard to do and it is a courtesy to other readers. Many of the posts are from younger members, and it saddens me that this is normal and acceptable to young people because it is how they were taught!

I don't even want to get into syntax and sentence constructions!

George, who started this thread, has over 500 posts, and when you go back and read them, they are good posts, not only for their content, but also for the obvious care that was taken to write them well. They are easy to read and understand, and that makes them easy to repond to. (I know! I ended that sentence with a proposition! Mea culpa!)

Crandell, see how easy it is to get on a rant? LOL

Darrell, off on a rant, but quiet...for now

I wi***hat I could use the best sentance structuring, if that is a proper sentance, but as you said, the dumbing down of society is at hand. My 6xx posts have some good content, but most, like this one, are mindless agreeances with other people. I like to use proper grammar, but with the time I have on a computer a day, it's not always an option.
Congrats on being a greenie,
Matthew

That is often the reason some of my posts seem to repeat information posted by others. I see a message and respond when there are zero replies. By the time I research, compose, and spiffy it up, several other people have posted. Today I was even in composition when the author edited the note, so that my quote no longer matches his message! I had to smile..... That is also why many of my messages have "edits". I see some misspelled word or misplaced modifier, so I go back in to fix it.

P.S. I do wi***his form had a spell check so I wouldn't have to cut and paste into MSWord all the time!!!

I am often guilty of going back, after I have posted, and reading my mistakes...which are invariable there. [:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][*^_^*][*^_^*]

What's the matter with me, anyway....?! I'll work at improvement.
