Clay traditionally was used in brickmaking, I believe. I used to live in Haverstraw, NY, a town on the Hudson River with a rich history of brickmaking. <br /> <br />In 1906, part of that rich history was written when overzealous clay mining caused a 100 foot high embankment to slide down on the business district, <br />killing around 20 people. A fire broke out that is said to have threatened the entire village but was extinguished by a chance snowstorm. <br /> <br />Wayne
