I have an idea and need some feedback. I want to do a modular layout. I want to make it a double decker with a movable (read: semi-modular) helix at either end to make the layout always be a loop.

I was thinking 2x4 or 2x6 modules based on the N-Trak design, but I am considering making it 3 feet deep instead as I want to run 6-axle loco's on the entire layout, mains, sidings, yards and otherwise.

I know that this would not meet any currently established standards but I don't see interoperating with other peoples modules at any point.

What do you think of these plans?

Make the END turnaround /helix modules wider or deeper as needed, and everything else standard module size.

The in-between "straight" modules don't need to be any deeper to run long-base locos. They can then run with other modules when and if you want, in a standard "big doughnut" modular assemblage.

Get a piece of wire. Put a loop in each end forming the tradition loop to loop format. Wrap the wire between the loops on a stick to form a helix. Bent it so one loop is above the other. Label the top loop the stage. Label the bottom loop the green room. Put an "S" by the turnout forming the bottom loop indicatring a spring turnout. Add a one way sign near botton loop. Insert staging tracks in green room to taste.

This gives you a staging area that is easy to wire and control because all the track is one way. When a actor (trainset) leaves the staging, the position of the turnout at the start of the stage loop controls it's direction. It can enter either stage right or stage left.

The Old Dog would argue that many trains moving in either direction will look the same. For example, a first class only all Pullman passenger will likily have the same consist in either direction. This approach allows one character to play both roles subject to the limitation that one actor cannot play two roles a once.

I agree with leighant. You would only need to make helix modules bigger.
