[:D]Welcome to the world of modelrailroading, first of all you are on the right track ( no pun intended) by going on the MR forum, you will find alot of anwsers to your questions,My wife & I live in Oregon and our layout is based on the Oregon coast, the website that the others have given you is a great way to start, look at different books and magazines for ideas also, start with a layout that is simple then work your way up,Remember to always have fun, and do not I repeat do not work on it if you are not in the mood you will not get great results don't make it a job keep it simple and relaxing, 1 to 2 hours a night, a litte more than that on the weekend would be fine, I use cork for the roadbed, and foam for my base as well my mountains.Hey take care, and enjoy! oh yes, put on some soft music, and for heaven sakes let your wife(if your married) in on it too she will give some good advice too,you see that way she won't get on you if your working on it when there's something she might want you to do [:D]HAVE FUN
