Floquil Polly S acrylic brush painted on top of enamel spray coat

Has anyone run into problems brush painting Floquil Polly S Acrylics on top of a base coat of Floquil enamel spray paint?

Specifically, I previously spray painted a DPM structure with flat Boxcar Red enamel, and now I want to paint the concrete and details with Polly S acrylics. I will be using lighter of shades of acrylic paint than the spray paint (concrete and earth).

Also, if I want to touch up small spots of the enamel (If I screw up), will I run into problems brush painting the enamel back over the acrylic?

I've always used the solvent -based Floquil but for health reasons I want to switch to acrylics.

Scince I haven't purchased the acrylics yet, and because they aren't cheap, I wanted to ask first.

When Floquil (it's lacquer based) is fully cured, it becomes solvent proof. Acrylics won't lift or craze lacquer or enamels. Try it on a scrap piece of plastic spru that has been painted with the Floquil if you are not sure.

What you should not do is apply lacquer paint on oil based enamels unless it is baked on enamel or a powder coated enamel.

Thanks gsetter! So if I'm understanding you correctly, there's no problem using the Floquil Polly Scale acrylics on top of the Floquil Railroad Enamel spray base as long as the enamel has fully cured. Will the acrylics paint on OK if the enamel is has dried to the touch?

I've used Polly Scale acrylics on top of Floquil for all my buildings without a problem. While I haven't had a problem in using the acrylics when the Floquil is only dry to the touch, I usually give it overnight just to be safe.

Correct Dave. There is no problem using Polly Scale over Floquil.

You do know not to paint over a glossy surface without dulling it first, right? If you do paint over a glossy surface, the top coat will not adhere to the bottom coat and will flake off.

Paint is basically a binder or varnish, pigments and solvent. The binder suspends and binds the pigments and the solvent allows the binder to flow.

There is nothing in Arcylic paints that will "bite" or dissolve lacquer or enamel paint.

However you should let solvents, in any type of paint, time to "degass" meaning the solvents have compleatly evaporated and the binder / pigments hardened. Even though the paint is "dry to the touch" it may pick up finger prints and scratch easy. The top surface of the paint may be dry, but underneath it could be soft.

After you have finished painting the model, let it sit a few days to let the paint fully cure.
