What is a "foam based" layout?

What are the advantages of a foam based layout? Is the foam bonded to plywood?

Foam is easy to shape and trees and plants etc. are easy to place.

I can be glued to plywood or used stand alone.

Hey Bruce! Nice to 'talk' to a Canadian, since I have relatives there. You can see my little tiny beginner foam based layout on railserve.com's layout section. It's called Pennsylvania n scale, but may end up with a Colorado look. Anyway, foam is much easier to work with than wood. I think you'd really like it. Happy railroadin'.
