Woodland Scenics

I have some questions about how to make realistic scenery. Please look at these pictures:

How do I make the grass, ballast and gravel look like the pictures? I suppose I must use Woodland Scenics or similar. Can someone please tell me about this, what colors I should use and if I should use fine, medium or coarse sizes of the material.

Or maybe give me some useful links to places on the net where I can learn things like this?

[maroon]for the roads in those pictures they used smoth-it but when i did myne i used plaster of paris (you can get this at lowes for about 3 bucks for 4 pounds) (by the way mix a bit at a time)[:)]

Good choice, Woodland Scenics is the Athearn of scenery products.
Easy to find, great quality for the money.
They have something called a "scenery kit" , starter kit maybe?
anyway it has a variety of ground foam in various colors and textures.
It also comes with step by step instructions for making trees, rocks,...ect.
Ballast color depends on your prototype/area it can range from white to gray to black.
Just give it a try, it really is very hard to do it wrong.

Electrolove - Do yourself a favor and go out and buy/order a complete and detailed book on making scenery. I doubt very much that you will find any site on-line that gives detailed enough instructions for a novice to do a really good and believeable job like that seen in the Port Kelsey images. Everybody seems to want to shortcut their efforts today using the internet. Believe me, there is still no better reference than a good hardcopy one.

CNJ has the right way to go. Read/Study a good book(s) on making scenery and then just simply do it. Only practice and experimentation will make your scenery come out like you want. You will find out that each time you make a road, rock, or tree the better and more realistic it will become.

The forum is loaded with previous topics on scenery and you can do an advanced search to find them. You will see that everyone has a method and you will have to try them to see if it works for you.

Actually, Woodland Scenics has some very good videos on making scenery, especially the one titled "The Clinic" which was taped during one of their clinics at a convention. Makes you want to do some scenery, and they make it seem so easy.

Woodland Scenics has excellent how to videos as well as excellent books on scenery construction. Start there, you can't go wrong.
