Mom just wants to run trains
Posted by crossthedog on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 9:38 PM

I hope this works. Here's a video of my 86-year-old mother at the throttle. She was over Saturday and asked if we could "play trains". A good son says "of course!"

Here she's spotting a sugar tanker at the confectioner in Priest River:

And here she's bringing the empty back down the branch. She's coming in a little hot, I'd say, but she's new in the cab.

EDIT: The links look live but they're not. If someone can instruct me how to fix that, I'll fix it.

EDIT: Also, I recommend turning the volume down. The trains run pretty quietly (Mehano and Atlas Yellow Box Kato) but the phone camera amplifies the wheel noise on the tracks for some reason.

Cheers.

-Matt

I don't know what process you used, but did you use the function above, with the paper clip-like icon?  What I do is to right click and copy the URL at the top of the page you're linking to, and then paste it here. When I hit the 'enter' key, it makes the URL active.

Much obliged, Bear. And thanks for the clue, Selector. I'll do that next time.

Your mom did excellent job running the layout.

I wished my mom run a train but she afraid I'll yell at her or she'll break something. You probably didn't have those problems circling in your guy's mind.

I completely enjoyed it, thanks for sharing.

@Selector, the icon I saw and used is not a paper clip but a hyperlink icon, which is a couple of links of a chain. I copied the URL of the Drive location and pasted it there, which is what I think you described. I didn't see a paperclip.

@JaBear, did you do something different from that to make it work?

Thanks Angelo.

I've been surprised how much she enjoys trains, both model and prototype. I guess I always thought she was just tolerating my dad's hobby. When I was a teenager, Dad bought her a Tyco "The General" 4-4-0 with the overton coaches and they ran it under the tree at Christmas, but that engine is really noisy and stops on all my turnouts, even with the powered frogs. If I were a REALLY good son I'd buy a Western Maryland 4-6-2 for her to run, as it would cast her back to the 1940s when she and her neighborhood friends would run to the end of their street in Pikesville to watch the trains run by when they heard the whistle blowin'.

Bear, I believe your tutorial may have elucidated the difference. I don't think that I retained the url tags when I did it. I probably just pasted right over them. I'll post another video and see if that does it.

Thanks again.

Not much new in this one, just a steamer backing out of Priest River and down the hill with the mixed local.
