A Pretty Epic Layout... I Want One After Visiting!

This layout tour is quite unusual... I never did more walking to film a layout in my life! I even got to drive... and when we stalled on a hill, the owner of the locomotive got off and pushed! Enjoy a tour of the Adirondack Live Steamers... Since the Garden Train part of Kalmbach is shut down, I figured I would share this here.

That's a fine looking railroad!

And some very interesting equipment.

Here's my favorite.  I brought my kids to ride it a long time ago.  And, more recently, my grandkids.

I keep bugging them to make an articulated!

There's also a live steam club, with the smaller more portable locomotives and rolling stock.  It's right next door:

I'm pretty sure there are more live-steam railroads in California than in the Northeast... thanks for sharing those!

You can't have too many, no matter where you are.

I'm totally happy playing with HO trains, but it is SO neat to be around steam propelled locomotives, of any size.

Actually, "diesel" is pretty good too.

At one time there were about six fairly extensive "large Scale" layouts in the NE Ohio area. Not sure what's left other than one called Penitentiary Glenn that I know is still in operation.

I came across this video recently and was pretty impressed with its "extravagance":

This layout tour is quite unusual...

When I was about your age I joined the Florida Live Steamers and attended events for several years.

I helped a live steamer in Fort Myers Shores built a 4-4-2, and that was quite a learning experience.

I ran into him at a train show a couple of years ago. He had the Atlantic on display, now over 30 years old and still fully functional. It looked amazing, and he was still very proud of it.

He asked me about my Mikado, and... well... it has still never even had the boiler fired. How embarassing for me.
