Make a featherboard, It helps keep the wood next to the fence when ripping. It also helps to prevent kickbacks.

=( I just had all my ripping done at The Home Depot for free. Infact, they made every single cut I needed for my 8X4 layout. All the bench work is cut, I just brought it home and I will assemble it tomorrow. What is worse, I got such a good deal now I have the potential for an 16X4 or an 8X8. I am not sure what the heck to do!

MStein pretty much summed it up best.
Personally, I started out as a young family man, not much money available for any power tools ( no battery models back in the 60's). I will not bore you with my trials and tribulations, but what I will tell you is, by the very best that you can afford. It is better to buy one excellent brand power tool than a cheap piece of crap.
If you have enough money to buy a table saw, go that route FIRST, and also buy a portable saw. Between the two saws, you can do most anything that you will need. Later as you have more money, a 12" compound mitre saw is a terrific tool that you will really love.
Make out your Christmas list early.....birthday and Father's Day also while your at it.
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! ShopSmith Mark V, there's a blast from my past. I used to work in a hobby store in Denver back in the early 80's. In addition to selling trains and all of the other general hobby stuff, the owner had gotten himself a ShopSmith dealership. I always dreaded the days shipments would arrive. Those things are heavy when they're crated. The boss was a bit of a wiz at giving demos, but guess who got to sweep up.

At a glance it seemed like a rather clever gizmo, but after a while it looked like a real chore to change functions. By the time you bought all of the accessories, you hadn't really saved that much money or space. In table saw mode, I thought it left a lot to be desired. Bust a coupler, and you better have a spare, or you are done for the day.
