which brand/color ballast most realistic for mainline?

Pre-wetting properly with alcohol or "wet water" is very important, even with "real rock" ballast. 

I learned the hard way on a test section on my last layout... The glue didn't penetrate all the way through because I hadn't soaked the ballast down enough with the alcohol prior to gluing. So, when I cleaned up the excess, huge chunks broke off with the soft brush, leaving 1/87th dinosaur sized craters....
