Ever have an oddball project?
Posted by NVSRR on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 7:10 PM

This little logging caboose fits that bill.  Found on ebay. half built.   Never heard of the maker, but I am not much into logging.   Ended up spending all day saturday redoing it. fun and a little challanging fixing up an old kit.  That cost 2.25 when new by the way.

Now it is sitting on the branch waiting for me to tie it onto a train and run it around a few times to see how it tracks. Or possibly doesnt.   No idea what will happen to it after that.  Stuffed and mounted in a park scene perhaps.

I don't think I have any oddball projects happening but that logging caboose is awesome!

Shane, that's a neat little caboose.  You did a nice job with it.

I suspect my wife thinks of me as her "oddball project".

I did a project a few years ago.  An SD40-2T, with a wide cab.

This picture is during the build, it's the black one, with the etched metal parts being added:

The finished product, in service:

I did the build on the Diesel Detailer forum, and the only prototype that was close any one could find, was a full size mock up locomotive, buildt for crash testing.  I don't remember if it was the DOT or the DOD that did it.

I also built a "hepage" a rebuilt F7b into a combo HEP and baggage.

That's all for now.

Mike.

Nice Shane!

I see nothing more fitting than that Little Red Caboose you builtYes

I love Oddball projects and there is not a more perfect time than this to post ..... (He himself) "Oddball" on your thread.

LaughLaughLaugh  I just love that one!

It's funny you should ask about oddball projects.  I got a little crazy on eBay the other night thinking these cars would be really neat with an old western 4-4-0 pulling them and a nice Orange Wooden Caboose.

I wish I had the one you built!  Please post a link if you have it, because I want one tooYes

They are completely silly and I think that's why I liked them so much.  The first one looks like a rather large out houseLaugh  I haven't got them yet and I cannot wait to finish them.  I actually placed a bid of $100 on the last one because I did not want to lose the third one of the complete set.  I'm glad it did not go that far as I got the last one for 22 bucks.

This is going to be a very short train as nothing else in the world will fit in with these carsLaugh

I remember Cliff Line and their ads.  For what it is worth, Clover House still offers some Cliff Line parts

i saw those coaches and almost did what you did.  I have an old mantua 4-6-0.   There is a guy 3D printing a caboose somewhat similar to the one I found.

I like the early 1900's Pennsylvania rr coal cars he is doing.    I am sure they survived on branch and mines for years after pennsy got rid of them

Oddball?  That was pretty much business as usual on many logging and narrow gauge operations. A lot of improvisation happened there... and it continues on in the modeling world. Following Mike Lehman's example, I have adapted a lot of HO stuff for HOn3, and N stuff to HOn30. Here is my oddball caboose project on my narrow gauge line:

Logging was a particularly fertile sector for oddball stuff. Here is classic thread:

I still laugh at Ed's (7j43k) response to that posting...

Does it count for oddball if there are no trains involved?

I think it was over 30 years ago Roundhouse came out with a set of these cars lettered for the Gorre and Daphetid. I bought the set although I seem to have only two of the three left, a combine and coach. I also bought a G&D box car, stock car, and I think a caboose although the caboose is also missing.

I bought a Bachmann bobber caboose very similar to that which I am repurposing as a cabin. The storyline is that the caboose derailed and slid down a hillside where a hermit salvaged it and turned it into a cabin in the woods. I grew up in Omaha and my inspiration for this tale were the stories I heard about the Hermit of Fontenelle Forest. I google to try to find more information about this and this was all I could find:

Thanks for the link to the bobber Caboose Shane.  That one was a little spendy as I've been tightening my belt spending too much money on eBay lately.  I have a similar one put in my cart for when I get PayPal paid off againLaughWhistling

I had no idea that three-piece Great Northern passenger set was made 30 years ago John.  I guess I'm lucky I found those.  That's too bad you somehow lost one of yoursCrying  You may already be aware but eBay has a watch-list and will email you if one ever comes up againSmile
