Great Find 1-1/2 inch Sanding Discs for a 3D Craftsman Sander

I’ve been looking for replacement discs for years and this outfit has from 60 grit to 1200 grit.

I have no monetary affiliation with this firm just want to pass on a valuable source for sanding discs.

I bought two of the sanders many years ago and use them constantly on and around my layout.  I have been without good discs for about 5 years.

I use Arizona Rock & Mineral Asphalt Powder for my paved roads and it dries to about 120 grit sandpaper finish, I use the sander to polish the dried Asphalt to a smooth finish then seal it with a 1:8 mix of white glue.

This is a section of my highway between town and the mountains.

There are two sanders in the picture, bought them at Sears about 20 yrs ago.  Craftsman 3D Sander.  I bought the second sander because under heavy use they get hot pretty quick, hot enough to be uncomfortable to the hand.

Actually they are very good sanding the Arizona Rock & Mineral Asphalt Power.  The power dries to about 100 grit sandpaper finish and the sander works very nicely to give the asphalt a real road appearance.

I’m currently working on a 18” x 48” diorama for taking pictures of my railroad stuff.

The sanders work great but since Sears discontinued them they also quit stocking the sanding discs.  I’ve been looking for a source for close to 10 years.

The new discs arrived on Monday, the sears discs have a hole in the middle and the new ones don’t but not having the hole doesn’t seem to make any difference, they work great!

I found a 3D sander from Micro-Mark...NOTE: This tool requires Micro-Mark's transformer. Power transformer

I found the discs at Micro Mark but like everything else at Micro Mark way over priced.  The Micro Mark price for the discs is $1 each plus shipping, the discs that I bought were 50 for $10 plus shipping.

The Craftsman 3D Sanders cost $34 each when I bought them.  The Craftsman Sanders have worked great for me just needed the sanding discs and operate off regular house power, no power supply needed.

Thanks for the info!

The Sears sanders were made in Germany.  Like that other product from Germany, the 300SL, there are a great many offered for sale, for example on eBay, but all at a substantial premium over what one cost when originally sold, even adjusting for likely inflation...

Finding them was really good luck.  I’ve used them for all kinds of goodies.  They are the perfect size to finish my asphalt roads.

When I’m sanding my roads its slow going so I tend to make it go faster by applying more pressure to the sander and then they heat up pretty quickly thus the reason I bought the second one.  When one gets too warm I switch to the other one so I can keep working.
