Track wiring
Posted by RICHARD BENTLEY on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 12:23 PM

Starting to build a ho scale layout roughly 10x15. Wondering what size wire to use for powering track feeders, it's gonna be dc controlled with blocking.

I wired my 10’ x 14’ DC layout using individual block homeruns with #19 solid bell wire over 30 years ago and it’s still running great.

I cutover to dual mode DC/DCC in 2006 and kept the DC wiring, my layout works great in either mode.  My dual mode is one or the other, DC or DCC, not simultaneously.

I used a DPDT center off toggle switch for each block, 8 blocks on my mainline, 16 for sidings and yard.

Richard:

I use DC block control.  Rotary turnouts for 3 cab countol, with walk around throttles.

I got a free length of 25 pair telephone cable, and used the wires from that from the terminal strips, to the rotary switch and then to the track.  I think it is about 26 guage.

I feed from the  power packs to the terminal strips with 18 guage wire, daisy chaining from strip to strip.

Likewise has worked well for 17 years now.

What kind of walk around throttles are you using to run dc ?
