US modern cars ho scale
Posted by wolf10851 on Saturday, March 7, 2020 2:56 AM

I have been searching for vehicles for my layout and I don't know why but I am having a crazy hard time finding newer models of chevy's, fords, dodges, toyotas etc for my layout.  I can fine vintage cars with no problems like from the 50's to the 70's but to find a newer model car is next to impossibl;e unles I want to go with european cars that are right hand drive which would look kind of weird on a Union Pacific layout and most of those are BMW, Mercedes, etc.  Does anyone know where to get newer us cars at that are HO scale?

An age old problem that has plagued those of us that model modern times....Sigh

Try every online model store you can find, there is a long list of retailers.  Seach them all!  Even keep a watch on Ebay.

I just found this place that looks promising, I haven't gone through it yet:

https://www.truckstophobbies1-87.com/

Here is a thread from 2013 that asks the same question, with some links and ideas where to find vehicles.

Good luck!

Sorry, after looking at 3000 Toys site they don't have newer vehicles now listed.  Several years ago they didn't have any vintage cars only new.

Mike Budde (What's Neat This Week) buys from a German guy on Shapeways

MadaboutCars

You can search by year or by scale, but not both unfortunately, and he has pages of cars and trucks

Thanks for bringing up this topic.  I too have trouble finding modern vehicles.  Good to know that I have options, albeit far less than if modeling the 1950s.

I'd love to see all these 50's models everyone says are out there. 1950-1955 would be a good range to fit my layout. Even back to 1948, that aren't Tuckers and aren't all luxury cars.

Check out eBay for Model Power vehicles, I’ve found quite a few over the years.  I really like the 56 & 57 Chevys.

If you don’t mind assembling them Sylvan kits are very good, I’ve got a lot of them.

Here is about 50% of my fleet I have collected. Three are resin, the rest are box-stock from the manufacturers. This is for August, 1954, so the 1954 model year is my cut off. There are four mass-produced 1955 body styles I know of that I do not have.

Oxford just released a 1954 Pontiac, but I do not have one yet.

There is a load of brand new 1955 Buicks on the car hauler heading to the dealership. I love that model, and I love my car hauler.

Really ?  That's all I seem to find.  The era you model, along with 90% of the rest of modelers, seems to dominate the vehicle and accessary market.

Unless I'm not identifying the year of the vehicle correctly.  I know that's it not what I'm looking for, so I quickly move on.

The transition era does dominate!.

Those Shapeway cars and trucks look nice.  I'm a little Shapeways shy, as the dry bulk tanker I bought, needs a lot of sanding and finishing before it would be a presentable "close up" model.

Randy, where have you been? In addition to Sylvan, Classic Metal Works has made a ton of late 40's thru early 60's cars and trucks in the last 20 years.

The list is so long I don't know where to start.

Athearn made 1956/57/58 CHECKER A8 cabs, which very few people would know from an earlier 50's car.

Athearn made nice Model A Fords, which could still be seen on the streets occasionally in the early 50's.

Athearn, Sylvan and Alloy Forms make/made "B" model Mack trucks.

LifeLike, now Walthers makes/made some inexpensive, but nice enough "generic" 50's sedans, one looks just like 52/53 Chevy, the other looks like a Buick of that era.

The list goes on and on....

You might as well request interior and exterior colors and trim options as well.

Huh?

Black interior with black and grey racing stripes black rims and a greenwood inspired wing lol oh wait that really is asking too much huh lol

The Vette is what I would really like to find however I want to do a car show on my layout so I do need other modern vehicles as well (since that is the kind of shows that I participate in IRL)  so yes I do need other modern vehicles but I do also want to find my Vette

Now here's an idea I could use on my layout a car show in the large parking area near the 50’s type drive-in restaurant.

I just did a quick search of Trainworld, and I found some modern vehicles from Atlas, Walthers, and several others. Some of the vehicles I was able to find include a 1997 Ford F-150 from Atlas, various delivery/service vans from Walthers, some sports cars, sedans and coupes from Woodland Scenics, and various utility vehicles and work trucks from several different manufacturers. So it's possible to find modern vehicles, but your choices are probably going to be somewhat limited.

Woodland Scenics recently announced a new line of 'modern' vehicles...not too many, but a step in the right direction.

I always find my self checking out toy vehicles when I'm at store like WalMart, etc.  Even the John Deere parts place I frequent during summer tractor season, they have a huge selection of stuff.

I have a business card from one the LHS that has an HO scale ruler on it.

I saw those models advertised in...some other place...and it seems to me the truck and van are reworked Trident & Roco models (reworked to be more generic?).  The BMW-ish sedans I don't really know the originals, possible Herpa or Busch?  The vehicles would fit in 1980s and later era.

That's funny you should say that, I thought I was the only one that did that. I've actually been able to find some interesting trucks and utility vehicles that way. Some of them may not be perfectly to scale, but they're close enough for my needs.

If you look on the American Excellence site under Ricko they have modern vehicles in the 2000 era...

https://www.american-excellence.com/?p=list&HERSTELLER=Ricko&MASSSTAB=87

Some Chrysler, Dodge, even a Lamborghini!

My layout is HO, theme is the Pennsylvania  Railroad, mid 1940's to very early 1960's.

I use slightly out of scale 1/64 M42 cars and trucks which are highly detailed, much more so than any 1/87th vehicls I have found and to me quite affordable.

A few Johnny Lightning, a few other makes, and M42 vehicles that fit well into my era.

I think I have well over 100 of them in various makes, models, colors.

Okay so they are slightly out of scale, but I am not a rivet counter either!

I don't go beyond 1965, but I still glanced at the Woodland Scenics site.  They don't advertise any of their models as being any particular manufacturer like Chevy or Toyota, if that matters.  I find that visitors notice particular automobiles much more than they notice any particular locomotive or piece of rolling stock.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
