Looking for best back issues from Model Railroader Magazine on hand laying HO train track and turnouts.
Posted by HOTrainFan on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 9:48 AM

I've been told the best articles about hand laying track and turnouts in Model Railroader Magazine is by the author whose last name is Cushman. The article (or articles) were written in 1954. However, the person is not sure if the year is correct.

Does anyone know the exact month and year of the back issue (or issues) of Model Railroader Magazine which would have Cushman's articles on how to hand lay track and turnouts?

I found 10 different articles by Cuchman.  Sometimes his name is listed as Bob, and some articles have his name as Robert F.

They start in Sep., 1953, and the last one in July, 1963.

Mike.

September and October 1953 are parts 1 and 2 for a double slip.

October and November 1955 are parts 1 and 2 of "building scale turnouts", probably what you are looking for.

September 1956 is making a crossing

October 1956 is curved trackage - including curved turnouts and crossings.

March 1957 is lap turnouts

The other two are a scratchbuilt station and an article about selective compression and his layout.

The Tony Koester article in the December 1989 Model Railroader is also very complete and has many more photos than the Cushman articles.

Koester's Building a Turnout from Scratch is also reprinted in Trackwork and Lineside Detail

This is my go to for building a layout.

It is Model Railroad Handbook By A C Kalmbach Fawcett Book #133 1951

My Mother bought it for me in 1951, I still have the original copy and it’s a bit worn.  I bought a second copy in very good condition about 10 years ago but still use the original most of the time.  It has a great article about the original John Allen G&D.  That article hooked me on HO model railroading.

Good Luck!

Thank you very, very, very, very much!!! I was wondering if there was a search feature for Model Railroader Magazine. I tried to find it but was unable to find it. I am going to keep this link in my browser so I have it in the future.

Thanks so much for your help.

I've always liked the "twice around" plan.

After reading the John Allen G&D article in that issue all of my layouts have been twice-around, John Allen hooked me good.
