October 2017 MR cover photo
Posted by Jeff1952 on Saturday, July 6, 2019 10:22 PM

Hey guys! Does anyone know/recognize which kit or kits Paul Dolkos used to create the "Baltimore Wholesale Grocery Company" shown on the Oct, 2017 MR cover photo? I'd love to use a building just like that on an expansion of my current layout. Any help is much appreciated...

I don't, I'd guess scratch build as he is a talented guy, but here is what it looks like.

There is also a MRVP video

but he does not describe the building and it is only briefly visible at 11:46.  The video mentions there were articles in Dec 2015 and Jan 2016.

He definitely knows Baltimore, so there is a chance Sheldon (Atlantic Central) may know him.  I pm'd Sheldon, so he may pop in here and tell us what he knows.

If none of that proves helpful, zabasearch.com turns up 2 Paul Dolkos, both with the same middle initial and same age, 80.  If you try writing him, ask him how he made the Esskay sign.

edit  The WI address is Kalmbach Big Smile   I'd try the VA address 1st.  No I will not put his address in the forum, you have to dig for that yourself.

I can't recall a commercial kit for a factory, warehouse, or other large storage building with such large expanses of brick -- most kits are a bit more window-and-door happy, even though this building on the cover is very plausible and prototypical looking.  The far end of the building does look familiar but I can't quickly put a name to it.

My hunch is that it was either scratchbuilt or kitbashed using one or another of the plastic sheets of brick that are available in HO.  Walthers, N Scale Architect, JTT, Plastruct, and the various European structure kit makers, all offer such large sheets of brick.  With so few windows and door openings to cut into it, and with a fairly tall concrete base foundation (plain styrene) it actually would seem like a fairly easy scratchbuild, even though of a large structure (the challenge with large structure scratchbuilds is to get everything nice and straight and even, so a large flat surface during wall construction is a must).

Sheldon doesn't know the man.  There is always a chance that he still has the original plans.

I agree, Dave, as my first thought on seeing the photo was Walthers brick sheets, as the width between the downspouts looks very similar to that of the Walther's sheets.  The Walthers brick sheets are also very difficult to cut for door and window openings, which would explain the dearth of both on the model.

I have a couple of grocery warehouses on my layout.  This one was kitbashed from a couple of Tyco drugstores, with a few bits from my parts department...

...while this one is mostly from DPM modular parts....
