My Relatively Large Custom N Scale Track Plan
Posted by OldSchoolScratchbuilder on Friday, April 5, 2019 5:39 PM

Since 100% of my net pay at the hobby shop buys train products at said hobby shop, I have expanded my layout interests to three scales: N, HO and Lionel Legacy O. Here is my N scale track plan plus video of five trains running on the N scale tracks. I can easily run 7 or 8 trains simultaneously. I will eventually have 10 in total.

Cool! I like that sunset video. Are you planning on adding structures and scenery? I see the bridge of course, and it looked like a few structures on the left. Not sure how you would scenic the multiple loops. Maybe a city scene there? You did a nice job on your layout blueprint. I'm just getting started. I posted "Layout Help Please" if you would care to give me some suggestions.

I am currently building all kinds of buildings and other structures for this N scale layout. It will be completely finished with scenery but I can’t start until one of our basement walls is repaired with new drywall and insulation. The wall is right behind me in the video.

I have three areas marked on the drawing for industry. Mines and quarries, agriculture and energy such oil and gas. All of the Kato track will be embedded in the ground so you won’t see the plastic grey ballast. I’ll use my own ballast. Even the viaduct will be remodelled.

This layout evolved from trial and error plus track availability. For example, I wasn’t planning to have a viaduct until a customer traded in all the parts at my hobby shop. I bought it up right on the spot and tore down my layout to start over.

Definitely will add lots of scenery etc. There are some excellent publications focused on layouts. MR has an amazing one containing 301 of them I think. If you don’t have it already, I can try to locate my copy and post a reference in your thread.

Pretty neat.

.

Everything you do seems to have a certain crisp level of quality to it.

.

Is that in Kato Unitrack?

Yes it is. I have advanced arthritis in my hands so at this small scale I needed to use a simple snap-together track. Kato makes quality products which I like a lot.
