Ideas for scenery
Posted by Krokodil on Thursday, February 14, 2019 3:38 AM

Hi

I have the last empty corner on my layout and looking for ideas what to place there. My idea is something more industrial, the mine in the background is already there, on the left side is the tower from the main station. The background is temporary and the new bridge should signalize something in changes from old to new.

One of the idea is some abandoned industry are or its demolition ( for that I can build lot of animations).

The space is about 20 inch in diameter.

I will appreciate your ideas.

Thank you!

How about a farm?  Or, if there is a mine nearby...tailings and/or waste rock.

Thanks. I have already a farm on another 1/3 of the layout, I am looking for something more "technical" scenery where I can place my working cranes and some more ( to built) animated things. Originally I planned there something (mine or orecrash & processing) with a small narrow gauge railroad but on the tests it failed on reliabilty.

Confused

I have the last empty corner on my layout and looking for ideas what to place there.

Hi Krokodil,

I have spent an hour or so contemplating your situation and I haven't managed to come up with any miraculous suggestions, but here are my thoughts:

The foam ramp takes up a lot of space. Could you run the bridge from one of the roads in the lower part of the picture? It's a bit difficult to judge the elevations of the roads, but if you could run the bridge from a road which is closer to the level of the open space you could eliminate the ramp or at least reduce its size.

An animated demolition site would certainly be interesting.

A soccer field could be compressed to fit into the space, although it wouldn't provide as many opportunities for animation and having the mine in the background might be a bit incongruous.

Another option would be to turn it into a quarry. In order to make it look more natural you might want to replace the retaining wall with a natural rocky slope. Your elegant bridge might not work with that theme so something more utilitarian might work better.

That's all I have come up with so far. Your question is firmly stuck in my mind so I will see what else I can think of.

Cheers!!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Hi Dave

the layout is sequentional ( 3 parts are screwed together, and the lower road is actually an entrance to a Station hotel.  There are to many lines between that road and the empty space, so I will not build a new bridge in the lower left corner.

The ramp to the new bridge is not a final yet, i am also hesitating about its modification. I was thinking about the entrance gate into the industrial area.

What I do not want to do, is to cover more lines, because we want to see some trains running around. Anyway is already over 60 % of the line is covered in tunnels, hidden yards and on the two helixes.

I would do something that would "fit" with the mining environment. An ore processing plant? A logging operation? A sawmill?

Kroc, I tried to view your Youtube, through the link at the bottom of your signature, and I get an "Invalid Parameters" error message.

I wanted to see what you had already going on,  to help with some suggestions for your empty corner.

You could do something like a team track / transloading area, with your cranes.

The piece of track laying there, is that about where the rail access would be?

I just affraid that any "big" industry would look too "cluttered", so compressed that it could be cumbersome to operate, especially with the bridge and ramp, which already takes up a lot real estate.

Just some thoughts.

Mike.

EDIT:  I had to come back and add, maybe the ramp could curve around one side, on it's way down, to open up the middle area.

What, if any,  part of the country you model?  I suggest not worrying about an industry and just filling it in with scenery.  That is often a more appealing and cheaper choice.

Excellent idea!  along with the bridge.  I did that in my pre-retirement life, why didn't I think of that!  Surprise

Hi Mike

I corrected my YouTube links, I hope they will work now.

Thank you for your comment.

Unfortunately from my layout there are no videos yet. I just started build some factory building what will be the object of demolition, the rest is still open. The road from the bridge will have some curves.

Very good idea, on one side I will place an old factory building in demolition, on the other side the construction site for the new ramp to the bridge.

Thank you.
