Is My Road Plan Good? (Ho Scale layout)
Posted by Hexxoid on Friday, January 4, 2019 8:21 PM

Hello guys!

I've recently finished my planning for my roads and building placement on my layout. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Sidewalks will go next to the road using painted and cut styrene, and there will be traffic lights at both of the three way intersections. Also, the two unfinished buildings are simply there to show where they will go. It's kind of rough, and I will edit the road markings for sure. (All the roads & parking lots were sketched with Mircosoft Paint) Here are some photos:

They are ok. the parking lot at the depot is good. Maybe you could make the road in the back an overpass instead of going accross the tracks, or make it go over the mountain. The 3 way stop is also kind of awkward. Maybe make a little bit more of a curve there so that you keep the main street consistent and make the other street meet it a little more square.

I agree with the above, but will add that I think there should be roadway over by the industrial buildings near the turntable.

Thanks for the idea!

If theres going to be a road there, it will probably be a gravel one.

I agree. Ill make the main street more straight so the side road can be more square. I also have one of those Rix overpasses, (never used it), so Ill see if it works there!

It's very ... black.  Most roads I drive on are more of a medium or light gray.

So, did you take pictures and then edit the pictures in Paint?  And this is what your showing?

I'm sure once you transfer this to actually painting roads on your layout, you'll get rid of the sharp corners, and turn those into an even radius, or curve.

It looks like a good start to planning.  The three way stop, yea, OK, usually the "main" route has the ROW and the connecting road has to stop.

Once painted on the layout, you can weather the road surface to a more realistic color.
