Welcome to the forum.  Your posts are moderated, so your reply will take a while to appear.

I'm not an N scale guy, so while you can do anything you please, I think it would be visually unnerving.

Guessing at what you mean by the second half of your question: Are there HO and N scale crossings?  No, people do lay dual HO and HOn3 scale tracks, but AFAIK they are not mass produced unless you go to one of the custom turnout makers.  Those same people could make you a HO - N scale crossing.

If you stick around, a couple forum tips may help.

  • Make your title as informative as possible to attract people who may have knowledge of your issue.  Mixing HO and N scale would have been a good one.
  • Details are important.  As my senior resident once told me, "you don't have to know what your patient has, you just have to write enough in the chart so someone who does can figure it out."     My loco doesn't run right, is no information at all.  My Athearn Genesis SD 40 is the only one of my locos that doesn't make it through my Atlas #4 code 83 HO turnout tells us alot.
  • Pictures.  Eventually you are going to want to show us something.  Posting pics is an art in this forum and there are specific rules or else we see nothing.  There is a permanent post, called a sticky in the General Forum on how to do it.

Billy, what you are suggesting is called "dual gauge" you would operate HO scale standard gauge equipment along side HOn30 narrow gauge equipment, HOn30 is basically 30" narrow gauge HO proportioned equipment on N scale track.

There's a few ideas on "forced perspective" which would be a HO scale train is running along goes into a tunnel, then a measured amount of time later an identical N scale train comes out of another tunnel farther back, thing is though the two trains in no way share track or a ROW (right of way).

HO/HOn30 (N Gauge) crossing

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Hey Billy!

Welcome to the forums!!      Welcome

As has already been mentioned, you can run HOn30 beside HO. The HOn30 locomotive bodies are actually HO scale but they have narrow wheel spacing so they can run on N scale track. The switcher in my avatar is HOn30.

Peco makes HOn30 track and turnouts which is the same gauge as N scale but it has larger ties that are spaced further apart than N scale ties would be. The ties are also a bit irregular so they nicely mimic rather crudely laid narrow gauge track which is how a lot of the small low budget railways that used narrow gauge would have done it.

https://www.peco-uk.com/prodtype.asp?strParents=3309&CAT_ID=3338&numRecordPosition=1

Note that HOn30 (30" track spacing) isn't very prototypical. There were very few examples of real railroads using that gauge. HOn3 (36" track spacing) is more prototypical but you can't run N gauge equipment on it.

Yes you can run N and HO on the same layout.  If you want it to look well, you should run the N behind the HO.  You put it back from the HO with only N structures, trees, etc. around it.  The HO up front has only HO structures, etc.  In between you put scenery.  It helps if the N scale is slightly higher than the HO.  This is called forced prospective.  What you are doing is making the scene seem deeper than it really is.

Obviously crossing the N track over the HO track destroys this illusion.

Good luck

Paul

This is perhaps off topic, or at least is nothing at all what the OP is getting at, but on a layout tour a few years back I saw an ingenious attempt at forced perspective.

HO track, hand laid obviously, at a junction with his main line, rounded a curve away from the viewer into the foliage and the guy had gradually narrowed the gauge until by the end of the curve it was down to N, and he had some N scale equipment on the far end of that curve which you could only faintly make out through the increasinly dense foliage.

I don't know if I am making myself clear about what I saw but it was devastatingly effective and highly clever!

Hi Dave:

Your description is very clear. What an interesting idea!

When I first started to play with my layout plan, I considered the more common route of having N scale trains running in the background with HO in the front. I thought it would be really neat to have an HO train disappear out of sight only to emerge further back with the same train in N scale. Alas, I lacked the space to do the necessary return loops for the N scale track.

All was for naught as my back had gotten to the point where building my own layout would be next to impossible in the condition I was in. However, a faint light has started to glow at the end of the tunnel as it were. The medical cannabis is slowly reducing the level of discomfort I was constantly feeling. I can walk further without severe aching, and I can stand longer. The pain is by no means gone but there may be hope yet.

Check out this site for info ( www.hon30.org ). It is popular in Europe, but there were a few prototypes in North America and elsewhere.

I have not seen the layout but I ran into a guy who said he had an HO layout but was adding a small N scale section as part of a park. The N scale portion was going to represent a "ride on" train for people in the park.  I would think a Z scale might be better for that applicaton.

I have used some N scale track with ore cars leading into a gold mine on my HO scale layout. The N scale track actually runs parallel to the HO in a loading zone are but does not cross the HO track. With the crossover pictured on other posts you could easily accomplish that. Its your railroad. Do what you want to do even if others tell you it won't look good. Judge for yourself.

There is a website   http://www.mehano.si/

The kid with the hard hat and the fake blue prints in his hands is the trains, but clicking on it doesn't do anything.  Google translate only tells you it is trains.

EDIT They have a facebook page and posted 11 hours ago, so they are alive.  You could try messaging them there.

Assuming they aren't available and you have to have one, there are custom turnout manufacturers.  They won't be cheap.  This is one, they don't show any n-scale but who knows  http://www.ohrtracksupply.com/
