Anybody know where I can find HO scale intermodal track plans for a space that is roughly 6 feet to a corner and then more than 10 to a doorway and around 3 and half feet wide the whole way?
I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.
MR had a project railroad that featured an intermodal yard. It is in N scale but maybe it will give you some ideas

I'm not sure of the definition of a "shelf" but no one can reach 3.5 feet into a layout. Two feet is about the limit. Some people have access hatches and some use cantilevered ladders, but both of those take the layout out of shelf range.

Thanks. Does it bear any prototypical resemblance/accuracy?

Not really. Real-life intermodal facilities are typically paved over, with lots of space between pairs of tracks for rubber-tired loading/unloading equipment. The project railroad intermodal yard was quite simplified. They are also typically (but not always) through tracks, not stub-ended as on the project railroad – again a compromise for space.
As others have noted, 40” deep will likely prove too deep for a layout.
How does the intermodal yard you are planning fit in with the rest of your layout? Is there staging? Where will trains come from and depart too, if anywhere?
Good luck with your layout.

It's the only one I found in the track plans section. It's not my era so I wouldn't know. The global search feature was not working when I responded, it works now, there might be some videos featuring intermodal yards.
Here is a directory of intermodal terminals in the US, Canada and Mexico. Clicking on one will take you to a google map showing the location. Switch to satelite view and zoom in and have a look at the track layout.

I have the right to remain silent. By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.
Thank you for all the responses! As to the question about the staging yard, it will be beneath the visible shelf layout portion. The staging yard is already being constructed, but not the shelf layout above it. I am hoping to reveal/scenic the staging yard and either turn it into the intermodal yard, or, more likely, I will make it a regular yard or decide to leave it concealed.
Google the Huntsville, AL. Intermodal Facility that is a stub-ended facility next to the airport. There are also some great ariel views on Bing. I'm not sure if there is a better prototype for your purposes. Also find a copy of the Kalmbach books on modeling Intermodal facilities.
