i am thinking about hiring a professional layout builder and was wondering if anyone who has used one in the past could comment on their experience and provide any tips or suggestions. How long did it take? How involved were you in the process once the plan design was approved? How did the installation go? Thanks in advance.

This is not necessarily and endorsement, and I haven't used his services, but check out Lance Mindheim's firm, called Shelf Layouts, or just do an internet search on his name. Many here have seen his work, (including me, it's superb), maybe have visited his website as well.
