Turnout microswitch
Posted by GN goat kid on Sunday, June 11, 2017 5:22 PM

Greetings,

I have been reading the latest issue of MR with great joy, as it is addressing many of the track issues that have been problematic for me. An important question remains: In Tony Koester's excellent article 'Upgrading older turnouts,' at the very end, on page 35, step 7, he talks about using a micro SPDT switch, connected to the switch rod, to control frog polarity. For those of you who have done this, just which SPDT switch did you use (please include source information, if you have it) and exactly how did you connect the SPDT to the switch rod?

Thanks,

The GN goat kid

GN: I got my SPDT micro switches from Radio Shack. I think there were three in the package and the package cost about a dollar. I drilled a hole in the switch "handle" and used a bent piano wire to make the mechanism. Very simple and very effective.

Peco makes one, but they only work with their switch machines.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
