Applying WS Static Grass Flock
Posted by sailor38 on Thursday, December 9, 2004 10:39 PM
Can someone tell me the most efficient way to apply Woodland Scenics ground covers? Shaking it out of the container it comes in takes forEVER!
I'm thinking maybe a teastrainer?

I've used a lot of WS flock, and found that using the container is just about the quickest way to get passable results. Shaking causes most of the flock to land flat, but SQUIRTING it from the container forces a large proportion to stand up and look like grass. Squeezing the container to squirt the stuff out also seems to speed up the process.

Note also that I don't use the flock as the primary ground cover. It's too translucent for my tastes, so I apply a base layer of plain ground foam (itself applied over a soil layer composed of real dirt and sand). When that's dry I brush on a coat of diluted white or yellow glue and squirt the flock into that. The foam provides the majority of the color, while the flock gives it texture. This method also reduces greatly the amount of flock you need to apply.

Don't know if you've seen this, but besides a must-have catalog Scenic Express (www.scenicexpress.com) has a Static Grass Gun. It looks like a hair dryer with a cup on top and costs $89.95. Best use is hard to reach areas (like rocky mountains). I don't have one but will very soon.
