CA accelerator ?
Posted by UNCLEBUTCH on Monday, August 15, 2016 9:13 PM

I got talked into buying a bottle at the last show. It works, the joint sets like ''now''. Problem is it comes with a push down spray cap, and te spray pattern is so large, that everthing within 3ft gets sprayed.

Do you think I could apply it with a small brush ? Or would the brush stick to the joint.

thanks

I don't think I'd risk using a brush.  Maybe you can make a mask out of clear material with a hole of the proper size. You may need a friend to hold it in place for you.

I've used the stuff, but I try to avoid it. Once I over-used it & got too much of it in the air around me. The strong vanilla odor almost made me sick to my stomach. Not good.

UNCLEBUTCH:

I know exactly what you mean. The spray bottles put down way more kicker than is needed.

My concern with using a brush would be that you be putting a lot more kicker on the joint itself than the spray will. I don't know if that would affect the strength of the joint but it would be a good idea to do a test joint to see if there is any negative effect. Also, I think you will glue the brush fibres together pretty quickly.

FWIW, I have never had any ill effects from the overspray, but I do try to move other things out of the way.

Might try a different squirter. Small ones are harder to find than big ones. I'm thinking perfume, etc. However, I came across a set of small misters made for the scrapbooking folks. About the size of your pinky, they dispense small bursts of mist better sized for your needs. Got mine at Michael's IIRC. It's a Mini-Mister with the website rangerink.com

I don't use an awful lot of ca, and have never used an accelerator with it.  I have found, though, that ca will set faster if you simply breathe on it....not as in blowing out your birthday candles, but more like the way you huff into your hand to check if you have bad breath.  I'm told that it's the moisture in the breathed-out air which actually does the trick.  However, don't inhale near the just-applied ca.

I use Zap Zip Kicker....applied with a brush...the way they recommend...coat one surface with Zip kicker with a brush, then put the CA on the other surface.. Zap Medium CA or the Gel is what I use, You have about 2 seconds, before it sets. The other way is to use a pump spray bottle....but I use a baby glass eye dropper, instead of a spray. Less mess, all over everything else. No damage to brush/eye dropper, cause You never touch the CA. I use it mainly on hard to hold or glue, materials like Aluminum to brass or copper parts when building My 1/87 scale trucks. I'm sure most of You know that there is a downside to using it, especially with thin CA....it weakens the bond. It tells You that on the bottle I have. It's amazing sometimes what You'll find out by reading the instructions.

EDIT: I should mention, I buy the refill bottle....don't mess with the pump or spray container at all.

Get a small Dixie Cup or similar shaped thing and cut out the bottom.  Spray the accelerator into the wide end of the cup and aim the smaller end at the "work."  While there is still excessive "product" being sprayed out, at least it is being reasonably contained.

I think Mike might be on the right track with a smaller sprayer. I recall seeing mini ones used for bonsai plants & such.

Might seem a little odd, but I have used nasal spray that comes in small plastic squeeze spray bottles and they atomize at whatever angle you use them in. Just the generic OTC stuff. The ones I'm familiar with you can pop the nose-nozzle off and refill with your kicker. It's not a pump sprayer.

Or this, below?

I haven't used any kicker myself, I do the huff & puff method Wayne mentioned.

I've used tons of CA with kicker. I recommend that you put the kicker in a needle applicator if you need to apply lots of it. For small amounts, I will usually dip a wire with a flattened end into the zip kick and then apply it to the glue joint. I don't like to spray kicker because of the fumes.

I don't know what chemicals are in this stuff but it is naaaasty. I've spilled bottles and been forced out of the room by the fumes. I always use ventilation with zip kick.

Like I said in My post above....a Glass eye/medicine dropper....I use the kind with the small curve to the tip. A #1 sable artist brush and even a LaBelle synthetic oil container with the fine hollow brass tip, that can be sealed. I put the oil in another container and use the container for the Zip kicker. Why that stuff even comes with a pump spray is beyond Me.

Zip Kickers main ingredient, is VM&P Naphtha:

I can't imagine using something to speed up super glue. I have trouble getting everything together with standard speed glue.  Indifferent

I use lots of CA and kicker to install trees. Dribble super glue on the trunk hit it with kick and done!! Don’t like the placement? Very easy to break the bond and reposition the tree.

Kicker is also very useful for gluing white metal to white metal. Helps speed up the bonding process.

Just use an eye dropper and apply the kicker near but not on the glue joint. Allow it to trickle down into the joint. As soon as it gets to the joint capillary action will draw it into the joint immediately and instantly bond the joint.  I do this all the time aid it works great. Kicker is best used with medium viscosity CA which bonds in about 5 seconds without kicker, instantly with kicker.

I don't use accelerator very often, but when i do I sometimes just spray on to  a qtip , or unscrew the top and just apply a drop using the feed tube on the botom of the spray cap ..
