Help holding track to portable bench
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 6, 2004 10:10 PM
Hope you all can give me some ideas. I have a 12'x7' bench built already but I have to lean it against the garage wall when its not in use. (I can't get my wife to give up the dining room for a layout) I attached 3" PVC flanges to the bottom of the bench and then I just stick 3" PVC pipe legs into them and lean it down go to the other side, pick it up and stick the legs it that side. I works real well I even have wheels attached to the pipe legs so it can roll around. Anyway the leaning of the bench is the issue. Im going to use Fastrack and it works good fastened to the plywood but I would like to put a 1/2" or maybe even 1" foam down and also build a mountian and an incline out of foam. I can't find any screws that fit the countersunk Fastrack longer than 3/4" to penetrate the foam and sink into the bench. (now using #4x 3/4") Anywany I really don't want to enlarge the holes in the track for bigger/longer screws. Any ideas holding the track to the foam and the foam to the bench? And how would I keep the foam mountian from sliding off when I lean my bench up? Would just glue hold it place? Keeping everything as lightweight as possible.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Try Liquid nails for projects. It will hold the foam to the plywood and tracks to the foam.

Latex adhesive chalk is also good; I use it for both roadbed and track, and it holds great. But it's still pliable enough that the track and roadbed can be removed without damage if it needs to be relocated.

Like the caulk above, make sure that the Liquid Nails is the LATEX version. Solvents in the other versions will melt foam. (Not a pretty site, unless you enjoy cleaning up messes.)

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.

Not sure how it would react with foam, but rather than liquid nails, I used a tile/vinyl adhesive to hold my track to a plywood base. The adhesive turned a nice dirt brown when dry and with the vermiculite I sprinkled, pressed and brushed after drying, I had a good roadbed look that holds up well.
