I just spent the last 2 hours turning two #8 walthers turnouts into a crossover. It is interesting that setting the tracks on 2" centers causes the ties on the two turnouts to line up and the ends of the last 2 ties on the straight sides touch their counterparts of the other turnout without trimming.
Anybody have a shortcut to share before I do the next one?

I don't have any tips, but maybe these web sites will.

Carl, I have a question for you.
Had you not trimmed the two turnouts, what would the on center spacing be on those Walthers #8 turnouts?

RR_Mel I wanted a good working double crossover so I made my own from Atlas turnouts. That took all kinds of cutting and trimming. When it comes down to making turnouts fit 2” centers it takes a lot of cutting. I did a post on my blog about the making of a double crossover. http://melvineperry.blogspot.com/2012/06/june-25-2012-my-double-crossover.html
