Fire escape size
Posted by Omaha53 on Thursday, August 28, 2014 7:01 AM

I am considering using the Walthers vintage fire escape #933-3729 on scratchbuilt building. Can anyone give the dimensions in actual inches or scale feet? I need to know the width of the platforms and the distance between platforms.

Also, how well did it go together and are you satisfied with the finished product?

I don't have the exact size here at work with me, but here's a picture of them on a DPM modular building.  I'll try to measure them later.

I've built up a few of these.  The railings are thin and delicate, so you need to be careful cutting them off the sprue and gluing them in place.  Fully asssemble them first before painting so the glue will work well.  The points of contact are small, so you will have trouble keeping the parts together if you paint first.  They are black as manufactured.

I didn't cut the stairway between the platforms, so this is full-sized.  I may have trimmed the ladders to fit.

These are on a Model Power kit, as I recall:

The stairway from the lowest platform may be positioned up or down, or it may be mounted so that it's moveable and held in place by friction.

Tichy also makes fire escapes.  I've got some of them, too.  The Walthers ones look much nicer, in my opinion.

EDIT:  1 11/16 wide, 9/16 deep, and I have mine spaced at 1 9/16 top rail to top rail.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
