NMRA's beginner section http://www.nmra.org/beginner/ has a page on wiring, including turnouts. Model Railroader's site has a modeling section with numerous articles. The ABCs of model railroading has a lot of good information that you should explore including wiring.
Enjoy

there are two kinds of turnouts...one an insulated frog like the mark 3 by atlas which require no special wiring and the other is a powered frog or select control turnout by pecos, wathers , and usually hand layed turnouts are usually powered frogs...(they cause shorts and need special wiring from the points to the closure rails to align the power to the "selected rail' you want the train to travel on)....since this is your first layout, i'd use the atlas under the table switch machines, an ac power source, and an atlas push botton slide switch...you can also wire an atlas relay in parallel with the under the table switch machine if you want to run search light signal targets or it can be used for the select rail turnout i mentioned before...atlas has some really good products for the beginner that are easy to wire...I personnally use tortoise machines with DPDT switches because they are slow motion and have a DPDT relay within them...they are a bit more advanced turnout controls but i've been doing this train stuff since 1977...you really need to order a model railroad wiring book because it is too much to cover in this sort of space..."model railroad wiring made easy" or the "atlas wiring" book are good ones to start with ...they don't cost much and they will save you a lot of grief (not to mention burned out electrical components) if you try to figure it out by trial and error...Chuck
