i have always used the sprung type.  when properly adjusted, they hold the points tight against the stock rail providing good mechanical and electrical contact thus eliminating derailments and dead zones.

... unless you use Peco turnouts - they have sprung points already...

The sprung variety (a) are better at maintaining tension between the point and the divergent rail, (b) allow for just a tad more error on installation, (c) would be less likely to cause gauge problems due to too much pressure.   I've been using them for years on several different layouts - salvaging them from one layout to re-use them on the new - and believe that you will find that that sprung ground throws are superior and worth the extra cost.

Hi!

Assuming you are using unsprung turnouts (most are unsprung), definitely use the sprung ground throws.  They are definitely worth it, no question!

Sprung will stay in place, while the riged can slip out of place if you accidentally tap it.  I have used sprung on my layout because of that reason.  My neighbor used some riged, and he regrets it.

Too bad the sprung don't come with electrical contacts for powering the frog.  For that reason, I don't buy the sprung.  Note that only the one type of un-sprung are available with contacts, and that model is unsprung.
