HO scale figures
Posted by awwrailroad on Friday, April 10, 2009 6:14 PM

I am building a late 1950's layout set in San Diego. I'm looking for post - WWII US Navy Sailors dressed in "Whites" (cracker-jacks) on "liberty". Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sure they are availible. I'd just go through the Walther's catalog and look. That's pretty much what anyone else will have to do.

There don't appear to be any ready-painted available. Walthers lists a fair amount of military figures, but no sailors. Most of the figures available are European form Merten, Preiser and Vollmer. You can "kitbash" figures and that may be your best. A good start might be Preiser set 590-16345, Uniformed People. You can paint them however you want and a bit of sanding, carving or sculpted filler can work wonders. Remember, your not going to be painting details like eyebrows. Just paint the whole figure flesh tone, then the basic clothing colors and finish with an alcohol and india ink wash, which makes all the detail "pop." John Allen used to make wire mandrels, dip them in wax and carve away, getting whatever pose he wanted. Then, he was an artist.

I found a few suitable N scale figures in one of those sets of 100 or so unpainted figures.

I was looking for

officers in dress whites

sailors in white suits

sailors in blue work uniforms

Shore Patrol with helmets

I imagine you can do something similar in HO.

I make a few people with wire dunked in Durham's water putty, then lay on putty carefully, with a dull #11 knife, or another small wire.  The stuff shapes well, but sets up fast -  Probably have as many freak show people as useable ones, but they are infinitely variable, and can be based on photos, or whatever else comes to mind.  Leaving a bit of wire running down from a foot gives an anchoring point, to set the people into a pinhole in the layout.  Have fun!

It looks like they don't have any 1:87 figures, which makes sense as that isn't a popular scale for ship modellers. There are some 1:76 ones but look to be designed for UK "00" use.
