benchwork
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 11:10 PM
[:D] I am remodeling my kitchen, and removed a wall that is 4' high by 8' long
with studs spaced 16" on center. I am going to adjust to the size of my layout, and start from there. one small savings in construction. not a bad way to start? I don't have room for 4'x 8' but have an idea, will let you know if it works.

I have a couple of thoughts on that - take them or leave them as you see fit...

Wall studs are not the greatest material. 2x4 is probably overkill for benchwork, but they definitely do work. Just not all that light. They also tend to warp and twist. Walls are also usually built with nails - you might want to replace /re-enforce them with screws. Also, make sure none of the joints came loose or were damaged during demolition. By all means, reclaim the material if it is good, but trying to preserve a 4x8 wall and make it into (essentially) a 4x8 table may be tricky, especially if you do not have the space [;)].

Good luck!

sorry forgot to tell oyu the studs are 1x3, not 2x4. I also live in a mobile home , they are built cheap, all inside walls are 1x3 stud walls. if they were 2x4 I would not use them.
thanks for the feedback. I model in N scale, so a 3x5 should be about the right size layout.
