Painting Brick Structures
Posted by mrazz on Monday, February 2, 2009 10:39 AM

I'm looking for any suggestions and techniques for painting bricks and more specifically mortar lines. I have never tried painting mortar lines. Any suggestions on specific colors will help also.

Thanks, Mark

There's already a thread going on this topic, under this heading.

I am currently using  a product called "Robert's Brick Mortar" to do the one of My structures. I may be able to post a photo tommorrow.

Pick a suitable brick colour, paint the entire wall, then, when the paint is fully cured, apply pre-mixed joint compound (for drywall) using a rag over your finger tip.  Just smear it on, working it into all the corners, around window sills, etc.   Once it dries, use a clean, dry rag to wipe off the excess, shaking out the dust as required, preferrably outdoors.

This structure was painted with a sorta boxcar red colour, then the mortar applied:

This one was painted with Floquil Reefer Orange, and, after the "mortar" was dry, it was given a wash of extremely well-thinned PollyScale with a couple of drops of dish detergent added.  Keep the brush-work to a minimum, lest you remove the mortar:
