Athearn FP45 Shells got 'em need powered mech for one
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 11:05 PM
I just 'fell into' about fifty Athearn FP45 shells (3620,3622,3623, etc) and I have no powered mechnisims to run them on. I would appreceate it if anyone has any info on these monsters and if there is another Athearn mech out there that I could modify to run them on. I would even consider a trade or swap, say 2-3 shells for a powered mech.

50 shells!

How did you wind up with them?

Athearn made the FP45 is powered and unpowered versions so there are a couple of ways you could go:
1. buy complete engines either way and throw away the shells that come with them
2. buy just the meachanism from Athearn. i would think on that quantity that a special arrangement could be made to supply mechanisms only by a dealer
3. See what is on E bay

A friend of mine used a Proto 2000 SD60 mechanism to power an Athearn FP45. He changed out the truck sideframes and made some minor detail modifications to the fuel tank. I haven't seen the model yet, but my buddy is a pretty fastidious modeler, and he reports he's pleased with the result.

Fiverings,

I had considered using the Proto SD60 chassis, but the fuel tank is too short as the FP45 had the longer tank. [;)] The modification would involve extending the tank.[:p]

Norboy,
have you considered selling any of your shells? What paint scheme are they in? [8D][:p]

Thanks!

John;

The best chassis you can get for them are A-line. http://www.ppw-aline.com/LocoChassis.htm

They'll run you more like 15 to 20 shells.
