Large Passenger Terminals
Posted by 667CDP on Sunday, November 30, 2008 12:26 PM

I've got a real thing for large passenger terminals (comes from spending a lot of time in them as a young kid), and as such am really interested in seeing what others have accomplished on their layouts as far as large stations and terminals are concerned.

In addition, Trix has a large (with the option of going VERY large) passenger terminal (Dammtor). Has anyone actually seen this monster in person? What are some of your thoughts on this station being used on a passneger inspired layout. At over $500 for it, it's extremely steep in price, but very unique. The only thing that I'm not overly fond of is the fact that such a massive structure only accomodates 4 tracks.

Actually the four tracks run from left to right inside the station above the ground level, although I am sure you could also run tracks to a terminus-style concourse behind the station. I found this photo, although the text is in Dutch: http://www.hetgroterdamproject.nl/images/stories/Projecten/Stad/dammtor/96.jpg Have you looked at the Faller Bonn and Neustadt stations as well? A picture of the Bonn station used as a terminus: http://www.martrain.hu/eletkepek/0923/09230015.jpg Justin

hey there,

I was lucky and got this station when it came out about 3 years ago. Im using it for a shed portion the larger head house has not been built yet. The station is supposed to be a through station but I turned it into a stub end station. It cost me $300 for the base model which is about 3 feet.  With the extension it adds on an additional 2 feet..Below are some pictures of it on my layout.  Its a Hard model to put together It took me about 40 hours. It does not come out the box looking like the model in the Photo. You definately have to paint it. I still have to weather it when the whole thing is done. There is also a 3d picture of what the whole thing should look like when its all done.

I have seen the Bonn and Neustadt stations, and they really are quite nice. Thanks for the photo of the Bonn Station as well - it looks great.

ACCatenary - very nice photos as well. That large terminus looks great situated on your layout - and the large 'hotel-like' structure behind it on the stub end is just incredible.

The feeling that I'm trying to capture is exactly that. A large city station nestled within a busy downtown core where the trains enter the large terminus' with covered sheds. Reminds me of the large stations in both Toronto and Montreal (Montreal with the hotel above it).

I know that CMR (Custom Model Railroads) is coming out with some brand new tall buildings - one of which would make an absolutely beautiful grand hotel.

Thanks for the information and pics though. It certainly provides great inspiration!!!

Here is one that the Arkansas Valley Model Railroad Club built to represent the Little Rock Station.

I have no information particular to this model. It can hold many passenger trains at once.

Accatenary,

 Those are absolutely incredible pictures!!!

I love the double arched train shed in the first photo. In fact, on David Townend's McKinley Railway layout, he uses a train shed exactly like that and it looks great.

Do you know if those arched glass train sheds are from a kit - or is that completely scratchbuilt? I recall seeing them - or something similar to them online before, but these look amazing and I would love to get my hands on something like this!

Thanks for those inspiring photos!

It looks like a European club layout but do you rmember where it's from?

Those double arched sheds are scratch built. I have never seen anything like that on the market in Europe or in America. Both pictures are from a German Club called the LOXX in Berlin. The main layout is City Sized - HUGE!!  Google the LOXX and also Google Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg. Both are city sized layouts with Huge Urban Stations. If I had more room I would expand into something like that although it would take 40 years and my wife would kill me.
