Trouble finding 1/48 scale (O gauge) sized buildings/figures
Posted by Bodi on Saturday, October 18, 2008 8:01 AM

I recently became serious about putting together the under-the-X-mas tree trainset...REALLY serious.  I am building this for my kids (girl 4 and boy 16 mos.) so they grow up with something traditionally cool that grows with them.

And I am having alot of trouble finding 1/48 scale buildings and figures for a Santa's workshop, elves and reindeer type items...EVERYWHERE I look, the items seem really hokey.

If you want to see my seriousness (out of curiousity) I have my set posted on a Flickr page.

The raised stage is where the X-mas tree will be with Santa's workshop around it, down below a barn/stable where the reindeer will reside.  I can SEE it being nice, but like I said the model buildings and figures seem almost cartoon-goofy.

Are there catalogs or websites that stock these items?

Unfortunately I am not aware of any. I built a 4x6 demo layout for last Christmas and had to make due with cardstock buildings for most of my structures.

Preiser makes an O-scale Santa Claus figure, here's a link to one place where you can get one:

As for reindeer, I would go to an educational toy store, or a craft store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.  There is a company is called Safari Ltd. that sells toy animals through these outlets.  I would be very surprised if they don't have reindeer.

As for elves, you seem to be on your own...

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

Outstanding!  I am finding items that are leading me in better directions than I have found thus far...I have just now found DEER that will probably work perfectly.

Thanks!

Try www.justrains.com in Newark, DE.  Or call them at 303-266-8063.  I was there last week and they literaly have a warehouse full of O scale and Lionel.  HUGE selection- if they don't have it the smart money says they know where to find it.
