Consider 2" absolute minimum, if assuming zero derailments and no need to stage with 0-5-0 switcher.  Gives enough room to parallel trains only...Gary

I presume you are modeling in HO.  I also presume that you can lay bulletproof track, so there won't be any derailments to clean up in the Netherworld.

My parallel staging tracks are 45mm apart - which is adequate IF you will NEVER, EVER have to reach in with the 0-5-0 to set things right.  2 inches is 50.8mm, which still doesn't give finger room but is easier to measure with an English measure ruler.

Thats what I used and have not had any trouble even when 0-5-0'ing.

I use 2 inches in yards and staging in HO with no problem - as long as the tracks are straight. You need more room on curves to allow for overhang especially if you're running long engines and long cars like passenger cars. Remember, coming out of the yard you have to adjust the spacing before you get into a curve so be careful. I've had no trouble reaching cars for derailments, but you do realize that you won't easily re-rail a car between parallel tracks occupied with cars on both sides even if you have 3 inch spacing! My suggestion is lay out the staging yard and try different spacing until you get what you're comfortable with.

Hi!

My lower level staging yard is spaced 3 inches.  Two was certainly doable, and I would have gotten another 10 foot siding in there by doing so.   BUT, my 0-5-0 switcher just couldn't handle it - and I am thankful I experimented first before I spiked track.  I strongly suggest you do the same, and what works for you is the correct spacing!
