New Project / Cotton Hill Station

[C&O Fan]

I had fun with the Mt Hope Station so I thought the station on the C&O mainline at Cotton Hill would be fun

My friend Art Choose to include it on his layout as he has room for it

I found some drawings from the C&O Historical Society so they will be a big help

Using the drawings you can get from the C&O Historical Society for a very small fee

I laid out all the windows and doors on the wood backing i will use

I am entering what I call the "2nd Stage of Building".  My layout is "finished" in the sense that I went through and banged everything out is quick is I could to get trains up and running.  Now that is done, I want to go back and start replaceing buildings and re-doing/snazzing up/detailing scenery.  Structure kits  (Beyond PlasticVille) is something I would like to try my hand at.  Something like this is what I have been looking for to pick up tips and tricks.

I got all the window openings cut out i still haven't cut the 2 doors till i decide

wether or not to use an already made door or go with making my own

I used  dimensional lumber to make the bay window

by combining a 2x4 and a 4x4 glued together it made a perfect spacer between the windows

I used a 4x12 for the top and 2  4x4s for the bottom

I finished cutting out the brick skin and glued it to the wood

I also cut out the base and an additional piece to raise the floor on the freight room side of the station

The 2 plain colored end profiles will be used as internal supports to seperate the freight and waiting rooms

 

 

The metal Pan and magnets are a big help in squaring up the walls and holding them

while the glue dries

I got the roof cut out But still have to find A covering that looks like slate

and lots more details to do

Average scratchbuilder = Above-average kitbuilder

I installed a raised floor in the freight and baggage side of the building with a seperating wall and door as indicated in the plans

Heres a shot of the bay window in place

I'll file and smooth the brick joints to hide the seams

I got all the windows painted and installed

 

Also got the porch roofs installed

 

I made the vent out of a window shutter

Still lots to do

I made some benches for the waiting rooms as the drawing showed

out of window blank scraps

I thought about borrowing a laser guided saber saw from Norm Abrams at The New Yankee Work Shop to make the half moon cuts in the end pannels for the feet

but used a rat tailed file instead

I installed slide tracks for the freight doors and used KD graphite grease to make them slide better

I made the door handels from bent straight pins

I installed walls to seperate the Women's and Men's waiting rooms and the Ticket Office

The small room in the center is the Baggage/Express room

I put blue painters tape on the roof and painted it grey as it may be a while till i find some slate roofing

I got lucky on the unusual wide 9 pane windowed doors

If you cut the bottom panes out of an 18 pane engine house window and insert a panel

it fits perfect

 

I painted the waiting rooms and ticket office floors boxcar red as they are terrazzo floors

Wow what a great job on all the interior details and also such good pictures

I wish my camera would focus that close !
