Layout Design Software Features Query
Posted by TankedEngine on Thursday, August 21, 2008 8:31 AM

Is there any Layout Design Software available that as well as the normal top down grid view they all do, can also:

- Give a 'cut through' cross section view at chosen points? (The view you would get looking horizontally straight down the layout base board at eye level then slicing vertically at a point, say 4 feet away from you)

- Show a 'side view' so you can see, for instance, the relative spacing of a hillside track  running above  baseboard tracks that are below the hill..

- Show a helix in side view?

- 3D view?

-Rotatable View(s)

Thank you

I'm not sure I understand all the features you describe but I'll take a guess and say 3rdPlanit.

I believe the first issue of the new online magazine from Joe Fugate will feature an article on using 3rdPlanit. Sadly, I can't post a link to the site or mention the name of the online magazine or I'll probably just get deleted... Disapprove [V]

If anyone is interested in further information on an alternative model railroad resource, you can PM me. Smile [:)]

Hopefully "I" don't get deleted! Whistling [:-^]

3rd PlanIt Version 8 has many of the features you are looking to utilize, here are a few images generated from the 3rd PlanIt track planning software from a track plan I am currently working on with the layout.

Hey Tanked!

I PhotoShopped in the "brown arrow" to show you that this is the area I was highlighting for demo purposes.

One of the other great things about 3rd PlanIt is that you can run a simulated train consist on your track plan with a host of locos and rolling stock in it's virtual inventory and you can actually get "virtual real time" feedback on if the track plan will work or not.

BONUS: Here is an image generated from 3rd PlanIt in reference to your helix question. This is an image from Ken Berry who posts on the 3rd PlanIt Yahoo Group. Quite impressive design.

Sorry, no "s", I do that all the time. That's why I have it bookmarked.

Good luck.
