ATHEARN PASSENGER CARS
Posted by musky52 on Thursday, July 31, 2008 12:51 PM

I HAVE SEVERAL HO SCALE ATHEARN PASSENGER CARS. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THEY SELL CAR ENDS (DOORS) FOR THESE TO MAKE THE CARS LOOK MORE PROTOTYPICAL. I LOOKED IN WALTHERS BUT DID NOT SEE ANY MADE BY THEM.

THANKS

I'd think one of the makers of detail parts would make doors for passenger cars that you could use, but probably not specifically for Athearn cars. I know you can get diaphragms made for Athearn cars. I'd try searching the Walthers website / catalogue.

You can make interior bulkheads for the vestibules from sheet styrene:  make cut-outs and use a layering technique if you want three-dimensional effects, and use clear styrene for window "glass".  The visible end doorway on the car didn't normally have a door, although a folding safety gate was used if the car was the last one (or first one, as seen below) on the train.

I do make end doors for my baggage cars, though, as most didn't have vestibules.  You can make them with or without windows, and as much or as little detail as you wish.

New England Rail (www.newenglandrail.com) makes vestibule walls and other details for Rivarossi passenger cars. They can probably be adapted to Athearn cars.

Most heavyweight cars did not have outside end doors just a gate. The door was on the inside vestibule wall. IIRC the Athearn kits came with vestibule walls with the door cast in.

Not the Athearn cars - you may be thinking of the MDC Harriman-style cars. Smile [:)]
