peco c83 vs peco c100 layout size
Posted by subman on Thursday, June 26, 2008 9:43 PM

I have looked through 400 posts about peco track vs atlas etc and have not found any post to answer my question, that being does a peco c83 #5 turnout take up the same horizontal (layout space) space as a peco c100 small turnout, a c83 #6 the same space as a C100 medium turnout and a c83 #8 the same space as a c100 large turnout? I ask this question because my layout design was drawn using c100 peco turnouts and I do not want to change the physical size of the layout 1" but after reading all the posts I now have some doubt as to the code size I want to use  also my cad drawing indicates the turnout size I will need  based on using the c100. Please don`t  tell me to go buy 1 of each turnout. Any help would be appreciated.

The track catalog for my rr design computer program shows that graphically, Peco's Code 100 and Code 75 turnouts are the same dimensions.  One might guess that the Code 83 turnouts will also be the same, but that's not guaranteed, unfortunately.  Peco's website doesn't give dimensions.  Walthers online catalog gives dimensions of the Code 100 units but not the Code 83.  I suggest contacting Walthers and/or Peco directly.  Or, if your LHS has them, just measure; you don't have to buy!

Peco C83 and C100 are different lengths. More importantly, the C100 turnouts diverge with a curve while the C83 diverge at an angle, so they are not drop-in replacements, even if trimmed to the same lengths. I believe all the Peco C100 turnouts have the same frog angle (a little over 4.5), differing primarily in the radius of the diverging curve. The C83 turnouts (obviously) have different numbered frog angles.

Bottom line, not a drop-in replacement any way you look at it.
